A festival for beer lovers has kicked off in Beijing this month. For a month, people in Beijing will be able to enjoy German Oktoberfest, one of the world's oldest beer festivals. Yes, You heard it right!! Its time for some celebration.. The beer festival aims at offering an opportunity for people to enjoy the fun of drinking beer and carnivals, so the Chinese organizers have joined hands with Schottenhamel Ltd. Co. KG (one runner of the Oktoberfest) to hold the festival every year in different parts of Mainland China!! With authentic beers from Schottenhamel in your hands, you can chat with people from all over the world, enjoy various shows and feel the festival atmosphere from the carnival. You can also take part in beer drinking competitions too. The Beijing International Beer Festival is celebrated during mid-summer every year at Xiedao Holiday Resort near Beijing Capital International Airport. It is similar to Munich Oktoberfest in Germany, where participants can taste authentic beer and food from Germany, along with many interesting artistic performances.
The festival venue covers 400,000 square meters and can handle 84,000 beer-drinking customers at the same time. Mascots, handicrafts, T-shirts and various kinds of souvenirs are available for visitors to buy. A variety of fresh German beers are provided at the Beijing international Beer Festival. Visitors also have opportunities to taste many kinds of German broiled dishes or enjoy performances of German bands and Beijing singers. All the beers are brewed on site. Standing behind a glass wall, visitors are able to witness the beer production process. For many people, it may be the first time to get an understanding of German beer culture. It's the first time in 200 years that one of the world's largest beer festivals - Oktoberfest usually held in Munich, has come to Beijing. Found on Beijing's Crab Island, eight Bavarian style carnival tents have been set up to host more than 50 thousand visitors. Instead of building temporary beer tents like those in Munich, the ones in Beijing will be permanent. The tents are decorated exactly like those found in Munich. And waiters and waitresses are dressed in traditional German and Chinese clothes, giving visitors a special cultural experience. According to the organizers, a series of large-scale carnival activities and games are available.
Thousands of beer Judges are expected to descend upon Beijing's Galaxy Soho Next weekend for the third annual Beijing International Beer festival. The Beijing International Beer Festival will feature 11 such brewers from all over the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. Local Beijing food vendors will be on hand to help drinkers sop up the ales. Even Beijing's worst-kept secret, the Taco Bar, will be making a pop-up appearance as a vendor. The Beer Festival has won local awards in Beijing for being the Party of the Year. In it's first incarnation, the festival drew about 700 people. They are expecting more than 70,000 people this year!! Wowww, that’s a huge crowd!
It is said that the festival is great as it gives exposure to smaller beer makers of the country. The Beijing Beer Festival was created by Slow Boat Brewery to support the growth of the Chinese craft beer and slow food movements. In its inaugural year, the festival is designed to highlight world-class local beers and breweries, while giving people an excuse to celebrate the harvest season with good friends, good food, and good fun. Well I think that’s a nice idea to promote local beer brands within the country. I personally think the Beijing International Beer festival is a great chance for people in Beijing, both foreigners and local Chinese to come out and try all this great local beer, that's not just beer brewed in Beijing but also from Shanghai, Chengdu and all the way from Yunnan and many different places. I also think that it's great for exposure for all, and it's a great chance for some of the people who don't come out to the taprooms and restaurants to try all this great beer in one location."
Beijing-based mental health professional Aram Sohigian said the quality of the beer at the festival is as good as any he has tasted. Originally from the United States, Sohigian moved to Beijing last year, and joined the festivities at the second Craft Beer Festival. He also said that the event was great, there were lots of different types of beer, great food and good music, It was a bit like being at home in San Francisco. The costs are not too high, joining the carnival is free, and for 180 yuan, or about 28 US dollars, visitors can drink as many beers as he or she likes.
Many people believe, there is no better way to cool off in the summer than a large glass of beer. And here at the Festival, the good times and authentic German beer are set to flow for a month. So if you are thinking of planning for a holiday with an ultimate fun, do not forget the INTERNATIONAL BEER FESTIVAL in BEIJING!!
