(information provided from a press release from United Way)
Central Ohio is home to many remarkable agencies working to improve lives and strengthen our community. This spring, United Way of Central Ohio will honor one of those special agencies with the 3rd Annual Richard V. Carrick Community Leadership Award (The Carrick Award). Last year's award was presented to Boys and Girls Clubs of Columbus. We are currently seeking nominations for the 2015 award.
The Carrick Award recognizes a United Way Member Agency for excellence in leadership, collaboration, and achievement. The award is accompanied by an honorarium of $5,000 to support agency staff in pursuing professional and leadership opportunities.
The Carrick Award will be presented Tuesday, May 5, 2015 during UWCO's annual Celebration of Excellence event.
We hope you will consider nominating an agency. Nominations may be submitted by UWCO member agency board or staff members, other community organizations, individual members of the community, and UWCO staff. Self-nominations are welcome.
The agency receiving the award:
Demonstrates leadership in working collaboratively with other organizations and systems to implement innovative responses to community needs;
Achieves successful and measurable results in one of UWCO's impact areas;
Develops and communicates a clear and compelling vision of a stronger community;
Engages in strategic planning to effectively address community needs and opportunities; and
Exhibits a strong commitment to and advocates for diversity and inclusion.
The nomination must include a description, in no more than 2-3 typed pages, of how the agency demonstrates the above characteristics, with supporting data and examples. Two letters of support for the nomination may be submitted and are encouraged, but are not required.

When Dubai does it, they do it BIG.
Already home to the world's tallest building, Dubai has another major architectural plan in the works: the world's biggest mall.
Announced July 5 by developer Dubai Holding, the so-called Mall of the World will include an 8-million-square-foot shopping complex, a theatre district inspired by New York's Broadway, a massive indoor family amusement park and 100 hotels. All told, the project area will extend a whopping 48 million square feet.
By contrast, Minnesota's Mall of America is only 4.87 million square feet.
Oh, and if those amenities weren't enough, a "network of temperature-controlled openable promenades" is also being planned for the Mall of the World, to protect shoppers from the region's scorching summer temperatures, which often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
A completion date or budget have yet to be announced for the project.
Though Dubai already boasts one of the world's largest shopping malls, the Dubai Mall, the emirate's ruler is on board with the new proposal.

President Obama's Statement on the Attack in France
Following today's tragic shooting at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, President Obama strongly condemned the attack, and offered the Administration's thoughts and prayers to both the victims of the attack and the people of France.
"I strongly condemn the horrific shooting at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris that has reportedly killed 12 people. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this terrorist attack and the people of France at this difficult time. France is America’s oldest ally, and has stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States in the fight against terrorists who threaten our shared security and the world. Time and again, the French people have stood up for the universal values that generations of our people have defended. France, and the great city of Paris where this outrageous attack took place, offer the world a timeless example that will endure well beyond the hateful vision of these killers. We are in touch with French officials and I have directed my Administration to provide any assistance needed to help bring these terrorists to justice."
