5.6 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Tokyo, No Tsunami Expected

TOKYO—A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook the Tokyo region early Tuesday afternoon, although no tsunami warning was issued and no impact on nuclear power plants reported.

The earthquake was centered in the south of Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, and occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time (0330 GMT).

The operations of some train lines were temporarily suspended, including the shinkansen bullet train in the northeastern Tohoku region. A few minor injuries were reported, according to national broadcaster NHK. The earthquake shook the capital more than three years after a magnitude-9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastated northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011.
