Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer — and with it, the busiest stretch of road travel in Ohio. Each year, more drivers are on the road, more celebrations are underway, and, unfortunately, more lives are put at risk by impaired driving.
Project Plan Ahead, a program created by the Ohio Traffic Safety Office, is working to change that. This Memorial Day, the initiative is offering free rideshare credits — up to $15 — on both Uber and Lyft to would-be impaired drivers across seven of Ohio's largest metropolitan counties.
"Honor the red, white, and blue by keeping the roads safe for everyone."
How the program works
Participants can visit the Project Plan Ahead website and reveal a redeemable promo code for either Uber or Lyft. The code covers up to $15 toward a ride — riders are responsible for any amount beyond that. Rides cannot be scheduled in advance and are available while supplies last.
Where it's available
Rides must originate in, or have a destination in, one of the following Ohio counties:
Plan smart. Ride free. Arrive safe.
The broader mission of Project Plan Ahead is straightforward: save lives and prevent traffic fatalities on Ohio roadways by giving people who have been drinking a fast, free, and easy alternative to driving. On high-risk holidays like Memorial Day, the program deploys targeted campaigns to reach people at the moment the decision matters most.
Whether you're hosting a backyard barbecue, attending a local parade, or heading out for the long weekend, officials encourage everyone to designate a sober driver ahead of time — or plan to use a rideshare service if plans change.
