Akeem Ali "Mesh" Lyrics: What "Put It on My Life" Means
The Mississippi rapper turns a private, all-in relationship into the standout from The Texture Tape 3.
"Mesh" by Akeem Ali is about a devoted, intense relationship that both people would sooner keep to themselves. The line everyone quotes, "put it on my life," is an oath: Ali is swearing the relationship is real.

What does "put it on my life" mean in "Mesh"?
It is the line most people search for. To put something on your life is to swear by it, the strongest promise in the vocabulary, and Ali uses it to vouch for the relationship at the center of the song. It lands because the rest of the record stays smooth and low-key; the oath is the one moment he raises the stakes.
Why is the song called "Mesh"?
Mesh is a fabric, and that is by design. The Texture Tape 3 names its songs after materials, including "Suede," "Muslin" and "Polyester Freestyle," a concept Ali has tied to the different shades of Black people. The title also works as a verb: two people who mesh. Musically, the tape leans on late-'80s and early-'90s R&B, and he has named Guy, Bobby Brown and New Edition as influences.

Kevon Pryce directed the video, with cinematography by Rafel Fortier. The result is polished and cinematic, in keeping with the smooth feel of the record.
