Burgin, Kentucky's Dillon Carmichael Reunites With Dave Cobb on 'High Ground,' and Here's Why That Matters
The Riser House singer and nephew of John Michael and Eddie Montgomery returns to the producer behind his 2018 debut.
Burgin, Kentucky country singer Dillon Carmichael released "High Ground" on Sept. 4, 2026, and the credits carry a familiar name. Dave Cobb, who produced Carmichael's 2018 debut album Hell on an Angel, co-produced the new single with Aaron Raitiere, according to the track's official YouTube listing.
The song runs 3:07, and the listing carries a 2026 Riser House Records phonogram line, the label Carmichael signed with in 2017. Nashville blog That Nashville Sound shared a music video for it on Sept. 5.
Country runs in the family
Carmichael grew up in Burgin and is the nephew of country singers John Michael Montgomery and Eddie Montgomery, a member of Montgomery Gentry. Country Central reports he began performing as a teenager, honing his craft in local bars and talent competitions, before heading to Nashville to pursue a music career.
Critics have taken notice. The Grand Ole Opry's artist page quotes The New York Times saying his baritone on Hell on an Angel "moves with the heft and certainty of a tractor-trailer," and Parade declaring, "Carmichael defines pure country."
From Hell on an Angel to Keepin' Country Alive
After the Cobb-produced debut, Carmichael released Son of A in 2021, co-produced by Jon Pardi, and Keepin' Country Alive, his third studio album, on June 13, 2025. That 14-track set included "Raised Up Wrong," "No Matter How Hard I Try," "Tiny Little Fiddle" and "I'd Call Grandpa."
At radio, "Son of A" and "Drinkin' Problems" each peaked at No. 31 on Country Airplay, per Wikipedia. The Opry page notes the Country Radio Seminar named him a "New Faces" honoree for 2024 and that he was set to join Jon Pardi, Cody Johnson and Luke Bryan on tour that year, on top of headline dates across the U.S. and Europe. The Opry also points to Where I Grew Up, a four-track project that highlights his bluegrass roots.
Why the Cobb credit matters
Cobb produced the album that introduced Carmichael, the record that drew that New York Times line. Eight years after Hell on an Angel, his name is back in the producer credits of a Carmichael single.
"High Ground" is one of several 2026 singles. Apple Music also lists "Huckleberry" and his latest release, "Honky Tonk in Heaven," out Oct. 16, 2026. The Opry credits him with tour dates alongside Dwight Yoakam, and Country Central says he has shared the stage with Luke Bryan and Cody Johnson.
