Founders Fund Backs a Dog Cancer Vaccine Designed With ChatGPT
A self-taught founder's attempt to save his own dog has become a $4 million bet that AI-designed therapeutics will reach animals long before humans.
Founders Fund has led a USD 4 million seed round into Gamgee, a startup building personalized mRNA cancer vaccines for dogs — a bet that AI-designed therapeutics will reach the veterinary market years before they clear human regulators.
The round was announced on August 17, 2026, with Founders Fund as lead alongside a roster of operator angels: Celine Halioua, founder of canine longevity company Loyal; Steve Eidelman, founder of veterinary chain Modern Animal; Dropbox co-founder Arash Ferdowsi; and Gokul Rajaram. Valuation was not disclosed, and no prior institutional funding has been reported. Gamgee was founded by Paul Conyngham, a machine learning engineer of roughly 17 years, and is part of Y Combinator's Summer 2026 batch. Deal feeds list the company in San Francisco; its clinical work runs out of Australia.
What Gamgee does
Gamgee sequences a dog's tumor alongside its healthy DNA, uses machine learning to identify tumor-specific neoantigens, and designs a bespoke mRNA vaccine intended to train the animal's immune system against its own cancer. The company says it manages the full chain, from veterinary intake through genomic analysis, manufacturing, treatment and monitoring.
The approach began as a personal project. After surgery and chemotherapy failed to stop mast cell cancer in Conyngham's rescue dog Rosie, he taught himself genomics and bioinformatics and used ChatGPT, AlphaFold and Grok to design a vaccine construct. Researchers at the University of New South Wales, led by RNA Institute director Pall Thordarson, built and produced it. Ethics approval took three months and a 100-page application. Rosie received her first injection in December 2025 and a booster in January 2026; several tumors shrank and she entered remission before the cancer returned following a later surgery. The company believes it was the first fully computationally designed mRNA cancer vaccine given to a dog.
The numbers behind the round
USD 4 million is a modest seed by biotech standards, which is roughly the point. Sequencing Rosie's tumor and healthy DNA cost about USD 3,000 — the cost curve, not the capital, is what makes per-patient manufacturing plausible in a market where owners pay out of pocket. Clinical studies are running in eastern Australia with UNSW, the University of Queensland and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and enrolled dogs are treated at no cost. Gamgee is pursuing a USDA pathway for a patient-specific veterinary biologic rather than an FDA one.
Why the timing matters
The veterinary route is the strategic asset here. A personalized cancer vaccine for humans faces a decade of trials; the same platform in dogs faces a shorter, cheaper regulatory path and an owner base already spending heavily on oncology. The angel list reads accordingly — Halioua and Eidelman have both built companies on the premise that pet healthcare spending behaves like consumer healthcare spending.
The obvious caveat is evidence. Rosie's tumors shrank and then her cancer came back, which is a case study, not a result. Coverage of the launch notes the data does not yet exist in the form regulators, veterinarians or skeptical owners will eventually require. The seed money buys the studies that would produce it — and the relapse in the founding story is, at minimum, an unusually candid place to start.
