Helsinki's Ambio Raises $5.9 Million to Fix the Broken Recycled Plastics Market With AI
The b2venture-backed startup matches manufacturers with vetted recyclers as rivals collapse and Europe's recycling capacity shrinks.
Every major brand has promised to use more recycled plastic. Actually buying it, in consistent quality and reliable volumes, is another story. Helsinki-based Ambio has raised €5.1 million (about $5.9 million) to make that purchase as dependable as buying virgin material.
The seed round was led by b2venture, with participation from Montis and existing investor Lifeline Ventures, Tech Funding News reported exclusively.
An AI Matchmaker for Recycled Plastic
Founded in February 2023 by CEO Tommi Bergström and COO Elmo Pakkanen, Ambio runs an AI-native procurement service for recycled plastics. Rather than operating as a passive marketplace, Ambio acts as a principal in each deal: it matches a buyer's exact polymer requirements with vetted suppliers, arranges long-term delivery and handles the logistics.
Quality control is where the company aims to stand out. Ambio inspects suppliers' recycling processes in person or online, compares technical data sheets with batch certificates of analysis and offers optional third-party lab testing. Buyers can trial samples ranging from a few hundred grams up to 25 kilograms before committing.
"As early as 2023 we recognised that the recycled plastics market was flawed," Bergström said.
A Market Under Pressure
Ambio's timing is striking. Europe's recycling sector is shrinking even as demand mandates grow. S&P Global expected nearly 1 million tonnes of European recycling capacity to be lost between 2023 and the end of 2025, out of roughly 13.2 million tonnes across about 850 plants. Cirplus, a rival recycled plastics marketplace, entered liquidation in March.
That turmoil creates risk for manufacturers who need steady supply, and opportunity for a company that can find, verify and lock in the recyclers still standing. "Our greatest competition is the status quo," Bergström said.
What the Investors See
Mathias Ockenfels, venture partner at b2venture, pointed to Ambio's proprietary dataset on recyclate quality as a key competitive moat. Every inspection, lab test and delivery adds data that makes the next match more accurate, an advantage that compounds over time and is hard for newcomers to copy.
Traction and Expansion
Ambio has worked with customers for about three and a half years, mostly in construction and packaging. It operates in the Nordics and Germany and began operating in France just weeks before announcing the round.
The new capital will fund further international expansion and broaden the range of polymers Ambio handles. Longer term, the global recycled plastics market was forecast in 2023 to grow from $69.4 billion to $120 billion by 2030, though that projection predates the latest wave of plant closures.
For American companies watching Europe's tougher packaging rules spread, Ambio offers an early look at how AI could turn sustainability pledges into a working supply chain.
