Kamaiyah Made Oakland, California History at the Fox: Inside Her 'A Good Night in the Ghetto' 10-Year Homecoming
Ten years to the day after her breakout mixtape, the Oakland rapper headlined the Fox Theater, a first for a female Bay Area rapper, per Local News Matters.
Oakland, California rapper Kamaiyah made a big comeback this year. On March 14, 2026, she headlined Oakland's Fox Theater to celebrate 10 years of A Good Night in the Ghetto, a show Local News Matters reported made her "the first female rapper from the Bay Area to headline the Fox Theater."
A homecoming at the Fox
The date was no accident. Wikipedia lists the mixtape's release as March 14, 2016, so the show at the Fox on Telegraph Avenue landed exactly a decade later.
Local News Matters reported that the curtains opened just before 10 p.m. on a set designed as the front of an apartment building. Backed by a live band, she ran through early songs including "Come Back" and "Ain't Goin Home," and ended the night with hits including "How Does It Feel."
The guest list doubled as a Bay Area roll call: E-40, G-Eazy, Bosslife Big Spence, Lil Kayla, Young Bari and 1 Umbrella, plus Detroit's Sada Baby. "You're a legend, you're an icon," G-Eazy told her onstage, per the outlet. "We made it 10 years y'all," Kamaiyah told the packed crowd.
The mixtape that started it
Visit Oakland notes she broke out with the 2015 single "How Does It Feel" before A Good Night in the Ghetto arrived. Wikipedia says Complex ranked the tape No. 21 and Pitchfork No. 47 among 2016's best albums.
That same year she appeared alongside Drake on YG's "Why You Always Hatin?", which peaked at No. 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is certified Platinum. XXL named her to its 2017 Freshman Class.
From Interscope to her own lane
Kamaiyah signed with Interscope Records in 2016 but later left the label and 4Hunnid after her project Something to Ride To was delayed multiple times, according to Wikipedia. She launched GRND.WRK in 2020, then released Divine Time, Keep It Lit, and Another Summer Night through Keep It Lit Records in 2022 and 2023.
First Avenue's artist bio names her as founder of Keep It Lit and calls it "one of the industry's only labels owned by an African-American female." The same bio credits her with nearly 250 million streams.
Even so, she told Atwood Magazine in March 2026, "I would prefer to be on a major label." In the same interview, she offered a one-word answer, "Authenticity," and said, "Every time I show up, I'm the same Kamaiyah."
She has 299K Instagram followers as of October 2026.
