Kid Sistr's "Boys in Skirts" Is a New Wave Riot — and One of the Best Videos of the Year
The NYC indie rock trio drops their most celebratory, most personal, and flat-out most fun video yet alongside their debut EP American Teenage Prophecy.
Six years in the making. Worth every single second.
"Boys in Skirts" arrives as one of the defining moments on Kid Sistr's debut EP American Teenage Prophecy, out now via Giant Music. Co-produced by Suzy Shinn at her home studio in Los Angeles, the track blends sharp-edged indie rock with Blondie-inspired new-wave textures, pairing energetic guitar work with lyrics centered on queer identity, attraction, and self-expression — and after six years in the making, it lands as both a celebration of gender fluidity and the band's most direct, pop-leaning release to date.
In their own words, "Boys in Skirts" is "a new wave riot about making out with the hottest person you have ever smelled — the best song to play at the gender reveal party you throw for your pet rock, and about falling head over heels in lust with an extremely hot sexy gay person." If that doesn't make you want to press play immediately, nothing will.
The video ties together the themes running across the entire American Teenage Prophecy rollout — queer joy and a love letter to queer community — and it does so with the kind of unfiltered, personality-first energy that has made Kid Sistr one of the most refreshing acts to emerge from New York's indie scene. Clever, witty, and naturally comical without ever trying too hard, they have a rare gift for staring down a camera and letting their dynamic personalities do all the heavy lifting.
The EP itself didn't arrive in a rush of inspiration — it took shape slowly over two years alongside producer Suzy Shinn, as life changes quietly rewrote lyrics in real time. "We were just all riding with each other and talking about our lives while we were making the project," the band explains. "The EP became an outlet for our collective emotions."
"That song has been a true labor of love and we are so proud of how it turned out," they say of "Boys in Skirts." "And watch the music video — it's got our souls in it." That's not hyperbole. You can feel it.
