Kontempo Raises $10.5M Series A for B2B Payments and Trade Credit in Mexico
Portage and IGNIA led the round for the fintech, which handles credit, payments and collections for Mexico's industrial suppliers.
Kontempo, a Mexican fintech that provides payments and trade credit to industrial businesses, has raised $10.5 million in a Series A round led by Portage and IGNIA. Tectonic and MS&AD also participated, according to a report from The SaaS News.
The round brings Kontempo's total funding to more than $40 million across debt and equity.
What Kontempo Does
Kontempo runs a B2B payments and trade credit platform built for Mexico's industrial sector. It serves suppliers and distributors, the companies that sell materials, parts and equipment to other businesses and are routinely asked to extend payment terms to their customers.
The platform combines several functions that are usually handled separately: credit, payments, invoicing, collections and financing. A supplier can offer a buyer terms at the point of sale, while Kontempo handles the credit decision and the collection. It uses AI and data infrastructure to automate much of the credit process.
The company is led by founder and CEO Matthew Meehan.
The Trade Credit Problem in Mexico
Buying on terms is how business-to-business commerce works almost everywhere. A contractor orders materials today and pays in 30, 60 or 90 days. In Mexico, as in much of Latin America, the supplier typically carries that credit on its own balance sheet.
That creates two problems. Suppliers tie up working capital in unpaid invoices and take on the risk that a customer pays late or not at all. And because most are not set up to assess credit, they tend to be conservative, limiting how much they sell to smaller buyers who could otherwise purchase more.
Bank financing fills only part of the gap. Small and midsize businesses in the region have long had limited access to formal credit, which leaves room for specialized lenders that can evaluate a buyer using transaction data.
How Kontempo Will Use the $10.5M
The company plans to invest in product development, including credit assessment tools, new financing products and AI-powered operational tools. It will also expand its data infrastructure and pursue growth among enterprise suppliers and distributors in Mexico.
The focus on enterprise customers is significant. Signing a large distributor gives Kontempo access to that company's whole base of buyers, a far more efficient route to scale than winning small businesses one at a time.
Why the Kontempo Funding Matters
Latin American fintech investment has become more selective, with capital flowing to companies that have clear revenue models and manageable credit risk. Consumer lending, the engine of the last cycle, has given way to interest in business payments and embedded finance.
Kontempo sits squarely in that shift. Industrial supply chains move large volumes, the transactions are recurring, and the data generated by each purchase helps the company refine its credit decisions over time.
The timing also lines up with a broader trend. Manufacturing investment in Mexico has grown as companies move production closer to the United States, increasing demand across the supply chains Kontempo serves.
With backing from Portage, a fintech-focused investor, and IGNIA, a Mexican venture firm, Kontempo has the capital to deepen its product and extend its reach among the country's largest industrial suppliers.
