Oakland’s BigDaddyChop, Mon$rock, Nán Fiero release ‘Medalla II’
The bilingual lyricist links with Stockton’s Big Daddy Chop and Mon$rock for a jazzy, sample-heavy sequel.
Nán Fiero learned to rap with someone staring him down. The Mexican American lyricist from West Oakland rose through battle rap before turning that sharpness toward boom bap.
“Medalla II,” released on Cinco de Mayo, is the payoff. It is a joint project with two Stockton artists, Big Daddy Chop and Mon$rock, which makes it a rare bridge between the 510 and the Central Valley.
The record leans jazzy and sample-based, in the lineage of Bay Area backpack rap that produced Hieroglyphics and Zion I. Fiero moves between English and Spanish, and fills the verses with wordplay and California references. The track titles show the sense of humor: “Cheesesteaks,” “Sandwiches,” “Drake and Josh,” “The Meg.”
He has not slowed down since. “YOU KNOW HOW THAT GO,” another project with Big Daddy Chop, arrived July 31.
“Medalla II” is streaming now.
