Quartermaster Raises $140M Series B to Expand Its Ocean Sensor Network
Insight Partners leads as SmartMast units reach 650-plus vessels across 25 countries amid disrupted sea lanes.
Quartermaster, an Arlington, Virginia company that turns commercial ships into ocean sensors, has raised a $140 million Series B led by Insight Partners. Overmatch Ventures joined as a new investor and First Round Capital returned, alongside a $40 million debt facility from Stifel.
Sensors on the Mast
The company's product, SmartMast, is a weather-hardened package of cameras and radios that mounts on a ship's mast and streams data back. Each unit generates tens of gigabytes a day.
Put enough of them on enough hulls and the result is a picture of activity at sea that satellites, with their revisit gaps, cannot provide continuously.
Quartermaster says SmartMast is installed on more than 650 vessels across 25 countries, with over 800 units shipped.
Why Now
Demand has been driven by events rather than sales cycles. Attacks on commercial shipping and disruptions to sea lanes have made real-time maritime awareness an operational requirement for fleet operators and governments alike.
"A big part of the story for us this year was, events in the world drive that clarity and urgency, and when you see that, you gotta seize the opportunity," said CEO Neil Sobin.
TechCrunch first reported the round, the company's second large raise of the year.
Where the Money Goes
Quartermaster is doubling manufacturing capacity to meet demand and moving from ship-by-ship installs to fleet-wide deployments.
"Quartermaster is building a distributed network for the ocean, where reliable, real-time data has been difficult to come by," said Nick Sinai of Insight Partners.
Why It Matters
The economics resemble other sensor-network businesses: the hardware is the entry point, but the value compounds as coverage grows, because each additional ship improves the overall picture.
That also makes this a race for installed base. The $40 million debt facility alongside the equity says the constraint right now is building units fast enough, not finding buyers.
