Los Angeles, California's Silversun Pickups Hit Arenas With Weezer After a Hospital Detour on 'Tenterhooks'
The band from LA's Silver Lake scene made its seventh album through a recording halt, then joined Weezer's Gathering tour, set to end at Crypto.com Arena.
Los Angeles alt-rock band Silversun Pickups spent fall 2026 on Weezer's "The Gathering" arena tour with The Shins. The 32-date run, which launched Sept. 8 at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, was scheduled to wrap Oct. 24 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Billboard reported.
It capped a year built around Tenterhooks, the band's seventh studio album, released Feb. 6, 2026, on its own New Machine Recordings and produced by Butch Vig. Stereogum notes it follows 2022's Physical Thrills.
A hospital detour
Making the record came with a scare. Stereogum reported that recording briefly halted when singer and guitarist Brian Aubert was "admitted to the hospital after suffering an eardrum injury."
"It seemed as if everyone was on tenterhooks waiting for whatever was next," Aubert said, per Stereogum. "The music has the same feeling."
Ten songs, one vinyl
"We wanted to make a tight record that could fit on one vinyl with five songs on each side," Aubert said, per mxdwn, calling it "an impatient, apprehensive, and more aggressive album." The 10 tracks run 39 minutes, opening with "New Wave" and closing with "Hot Wired."
Lead single "The Wreckage" arrived Nov. 6, 2025. Aubert described it as a bass-driven song in the spirit of The Cure and Jane's Addiction, built around a distinctive bassline for bassist Nikki Monninger. "New Wave" followed as a single on Dec. 5, 2025, and "Long Gone" on Jan. 15, 2026. It is Vig's third album with the band.
Silver Lake roots
Aubert and Monninger formed Silversun Pickups in Los Angeles in 2000, and the band became part of the Silver Lake scene, playing mostly at Silverlake Lounge and nearby Spaceland. The name comes from Silversun, a liquor store across from the Silverlake Lounge.
"Lazy Eye" and "Well Thought Out Twinkles" both reached the top 10 of Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart in 2007, and the band earned a Best New Artist nomination at the 52nd Grammy Awards. Keyboardist Joe Lester and drummer Christopher Guanlao, who both joined in 2002, round out the lineup.
From headliner to arena support
Before the Weezer dates, Stereogum listed a North American headlining tour running from Feb. 19 in Santa Ana, California, to May 18 in El Paso, Texas. On Oct. 3, WSOC-TV photographed the three-band bill at Charlotte's Spectrum Center, where Silversun Pickups and The Shins opened for Weezer.
