SmallClaims Raises $2.3 Million to Let AI Agents Chase Down Your Unpaid Invoices
Vendep Capital leads the seed round for the Copenhagen legaltech startup automating small-claims lawsuits and debt recovery.
Ask any freelancer or small business owner about their least favorite task and "chasing unpaid invoices" will be near the top of the list. Going to court over a few thousand dollars is usually more trouble than it is worth, which is exactly why so much money goes uncollected. Copenhagen startup SmallClaims thinks AI can change that math.
The legaltech company has raised €2 million (about $2.3 million) in a seed round led by Vendep Capital, a Finnish venture firm that backs early-stage B2B software companies in the Nordic and Baltic regions, according to The SaaS News, which cited ArcticStartup.
AI Agents That Take People to Court
Founded in 2021 by CEO Christian Olson, SmallClaims uses specialized AI agents to automate small-claims litigation and debt recovery. The platform helps businesses and individuals recover unpaid invoices by streamlining each stage of the process: assessing whether a case is worth pursuing, negotiating with the debtor, handling court proceedings and enforcing a judgment once it is won.
Each of those steps traditionally requires a lawyer, a collections agency or hours of a business owner's time spent filling out forms. By breaking the process into tasks that dedicated AI agents can handle, SmallClaims aims to make pursuing small debts economical even when the amount at stake is modest.
Why Small Claims Is a Big Opportunity
Late and unpaid invoices are a chronic drain on small businesses everywhere. Many owners simply write off what they are owed because the cost and complexity of recovery outweigh the payoff. That creates a large, underserved market: claims too small for law firms to care about but big enough to matter to the business that is owed.
Legal work is also one of the areas where AI agents are proving most practical. Small-claims cases follow repeatable procedures, rely on standard documents and turn on clear facts, making them well suited to automation. Startups across the U.S. and Europe are racing to apply AI to everything from contract review to litigation support, and debt recovery is one of the clearest paths to revenue.
What the Money Will Fund
SmallClaims plans to use the funding to develop its AI platform further, expand into additional European markets and grow its team at its Copenhagen headquarters. Expansion is not trivial in legaltech: each country has its own court procedures, filing rules and enforcement systems, so every new market requires the platform to learn a new legal playbook.
Vendep Capital's backing gives the company a regional investor with deep experience scaling B2B software across Northern Europe, a logical first step before tackling larger markets.
The Bottom Line
SmallClaims is betting that AI will make justice for small debts fast and cheap enough to be worth pursuing. If it works, the businesses that have quietly absorbed unpaid invoices for years may finally have a way to get paid without hiring a lawyer.
