Vince Staples Raises "White Flag" — And It's the Most Powerful Thing He's Ever Done

The Long Beach icon is back with a politically charged gut-punch of a single, and his new album Cry Baby drops June 5th.

Vince Staples has never been one to shy away from saying what others won't. With "White Flag," the second single off his highly anticipated album Cry Baby, he doesn't just say it — he paints it, shoots it, and leaves it bleeding on screen for you to figure out.

The track is built around a beat that sits somewhere between Motown and psychedelic jazz — snappy drums, a suave bassline, and soft background vocal coos framing one of Staples' most quietly devastating performances. It features haunting vocals, live instrumentation, and an overall quirky but sleek sound that you simply wouldn't expect from a rapper of his pedigree — and that's exactly the point.

Lyrically, "White Flag" addresses the inequity and exploitation Black people suffer, with Staples rapping about being dehumanized and confronted by cops. "Hip-hop taught me all y'all love Black folks, but it's not enough," he raps over the sauntering beat — a song that teeters between exhaustion and despair, especially in the chorus: "White flag, I don't wanna fight no more."

The video, co-directed by Staples and Bradley J. Calder, delivers the visual gut-punch to match. Staples paints an American flag white, then riddles it with bullet holes — violence directed at a raised white flag of surrender, or a call to action against a whitewashed democracy. The imagery is deliberately open-ended, and the more you sit with it, the more it unravels.

This is all part of what's shaping up to be the most important rollout of Staples' career. Cry Baby marks the inaugural album of the most independent phase of his career, turning outward to process the endlessly repeating cycles of American tumult and reflecting them back with sharply honed clarity. Staples built each track around live instrumentation, underscoring the album's immediacy. He's also been connecting directly with fans — hosting a free rehearsal event at iconic LA punk club The Smell and personally manning the ticket booth at El Rey Theatre for his June 4th album release show.
