Who Are Brother Dynamite? NYC's Power-Pop Duo Hiding in Plain Sight

Friends since high school, a They Might Be Giants guest and album art from Rush's longtime cover designer. Meet the band.

Here's a fun one for the crate-diggers. Brother Dynamite are a New York City duo with a story that stretches back to high school, a full-length album with some surprising guests, and a 2024 single that won praise from a local radio station. If "The Girl's In Love" landed in your queue, here's who you're listening to.

Who Are Brother Dynamite?

Brother Dynamite are Shawn Moynihan and Alan Miller. According to the band's Spotify biography, the New York City-based pair have been playing music and writing songs together since high school. Credits on their Bandcamp page show how they split the work: Shawn handles vocals, drums and guitar, while Alan covers guitar, bass, keyboards and backing vocals.

That's a lot of instruments between two people, which helps explain how a duo can sound like a full rock band.

The Album With the Famous Friends

Their full-length album, If We Dare, features 12 original songs. Two details from their bio stand out. Danny Weinkauf, bassist for They Might Be Giants, plays on two tracks. And the cover artwork was created by Hugh Syme, the designer famous for his work with Rush, Dream Theater, Joe Bonamassa and Bon Jovi.

For a self-driven indie duo, those are some seriously cool names to have in the credits.

About "The Girl's In Love"

"The Girl's In Love" was released on September 12, 2024. According to the band's bio, New York City's Maker Park Radio hailed it as "polished power pop perfection."

Quick music lesson: power pop is the genre built on big guitar hooks, tight melodies and short bursts of joy. Think of the bright, catchy side of rock that bands like Cheap Trick and Big Star made famous. "The Girl's In Love" runs four and a half minutes, giving the hooks some extra room to land.

It was one of two singles the band released in 2024, alongside "What Are You Waiting For," which their bio calls a rousing, summer-themed track. They followed that with a remastered version of their holiday song "It's Christmas Time, Alright!" in December 2024.

Still Rolling

The duo hasn't slowed down. Their bio highlights the single "Good Trouble," which blends rock with touches of soul, and their Bandcamp page shows a new track, "Violet," released on January 22, 2026.

Why They're Worth Your Time

Musical friendships that start in high school and keep going are rare, and Brother Dynamite are still writing and releasing new songs together. If you love guitar-pop with real craft behind it, they deserve a spot on your playlist.
