Wrtn Technologies Raises $72 Million Series C, Becoming Korea's First Consumer AI Unicorn
A Seoul startup best known for a free chatbot portal is now valued above 1 trillion KRW on the strength of a paid character-chat app that earns more overseas than at home.
Wrtn Technologies has become the first South Korean consumer AI startup to be valued above 1 trillion KRW, and it got there on a character-chat app that now earns more abroad than it does at home.
The Seoul company raised 100 billion KRW, or roughly $72 million, in a Series C announced on Aug. 26. Coreline Ventures, a U.S. firm, led the round, with Eugene Asset Management joining as the other new investor. Existing backers Goodwater Capital, Antler Global, Woori Venture Partners and Korea Development Bank followed on; some Korean reports also list Capstone Partners among returning shareholders. The round lifts cumulative funding to about 230 billion KRW, or roughly $167 million, since the company was founded in 2021 by chief executive Lee Se-young. Dollar figures move around across coverage — the valuation has been rendered as anything from $722 million to $869 million, and one Korean daily put the figure at 1.4 trillion KRW — differences that mostly reflect exchange-rate assumptions and pre- versus post-money framing. The KRW numbers are consistent across outlets; the USD ones are not.
What the company does
Wrtn began as a Korean-language writing assistant and grew into a free consumer front end that bundles frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google behind a single interface, covering search, document drafting, presentation design and image generation. That product is the funnel, not the business. The revenue sits in Crack, a paid character-chat service launched in April 2025 that ships as Charaful in Japan and as OOC in North America. It sells companionship and interactive fiction rather than productivity, which puts Wrtn in a different competitive set than the enterprise AI vendors it superficially resembles — and on a consumer-entertainment cost structure, with marketing spend to match.
The numbers behind the round
Wrtn posted 47.1 billion KRW in revenue in 2025 and projects more than 200 billion KRW for 2026, a fourfold jump. The swing factor is OOC, which launched in North America in May 2026 and cleared 10 billion KRW in monthly revenue within three months. Overseas revenue has now passed domestic revenue, an unusual position for a Korean consumer app this early. Two caveats belong next to those figures: the 2026 number is a company projection, not a result, and Wrtn disclosed neither user counts nor profitability alongside the round. A valuation of 1 trillion KRW against 47.1 billion KRW of trailing revenue is a bet on the projection holding.
Why the timing matters
Korea has funded plenty of AI infrastructure and enterprise plays and produced very few consumer AI companies at scale, which is why the unicorn label is being attached to this round so insistently at home. The investor mix is the more telling detail: a U.S. lead and Goodwater, a consumer-focused American firm, alongside Korea Development Bank, a state-backed lender. That is domestic policy capital and foreign growth capital underwriting the same thesis, which is that a Korean team can win paying consumers in North America and Japan without a U.S. headquarters. Wrtn says the money goes to global expansion and product work. The harder question is whether a business built on character chat can hold its cohorts once the launch marketing stops — a question the next four quarters, not this round, will answer.
