Mickalene Thomas is visual artist and filmmaker who finds inspiration in art history and popular culture to create an image of female sexuality, beauty, and power. Thomas uses her art to study how identity, gender, and sense of self are informed by the ways women are represented in art and popular culture. She uses rhinestones as her signature material, in order to create a new layer of meaning and a metaphor of artifice within her works. Thomas currently has a solo exhibit featuring 30 of her paintings, videos and immersive instillations in the Wexner Center's art space. This exhibit will be available to the public until Dec 30, for more information on Thomas and her exhibit click here.
