On Monday June 6th, Henry Green a 23-year-old black man was gunned down just one block away from Linden McKinley High School by plain clothes officers. Multiple witness reports indicate that the police did not clearly identify themselves nor gave sufficient time for Green to respond before shooting. Less than two weeks after the launch of the city's Columbus Safe Communities Initiative, another young black man is dead at the hands of police. Another Linden mother’s heart is broken.
We believe Columbus can be a healthy and safe city where families can thrive. Investing in jobs, economic opportunities, community programs, physical and mental health is what keeps our communities safe. Over-policing and militarizing neighborhoods does not make our streets any safer. Pulling up in an unmarked SUV with tinted windows in a neighborhood where people already are on alert for their safety demonstrates reckless and callous indifference toward the experience and well being of black people in our community. Justice must be served for Henry Green and his family, this is what you can do to help.
Peace and power, Molly Shack Columbus People's Partnership
